A Kenyan Thanksgiving

November 26, 2009 by darajachoir

Last night Daraja shared a Thanksgiving meal with host homes at FBC Greenwood! The choir spent the afternoon at the church preparing a full Kenyan spread for the dinner: rice, kale, stew, chapati, and chi tea!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Daraja got to be college students for a day at Toccoa Falls College on Monday! First, the choir practiced and played soccer with several of the TFC soccer athletes. Then, Daraja got to eat lunch in the dining hall with all of the other students. Daraja finished their day on the TFC campus by hiking up to the beautiful Toccoa Falls!

This week Daraja called Alabama its home, first in Birmingham at Asbury UMC, and then in Decatur at First Bible Church! Here are a few shots from our time in Decatur!

Hibachi!!

November 19, 2009 by darajachoir

Tuesday night was hibachi night for Daraja this week!

What we learned:
1) Fire is cool!
2) Catching a shrimp in your mouth is harder than it looks.
3) Sticking a chopstick in napkin makes a great makeshift chef’s hat.

One for the Ages

November 18, 2009 by darajachoir

Perhaps you’ve read James 1:27, in which God urges us to look after orphans and widows, but have you ever heard of orphans looking after widows? Yesterday, Daraja led worship at an assisted living home here in Birmingham, Alabama. By leading worship, these 23 orphaned and vulnerable children from Kenya looked after everyone living in the home, most of whom were widows and widowers.

It was an incredible time and so neat to watch kids from Kenya connect with senior citizens in Alabama! They have radically different backgrounds and come from different generations (different centuries even!). But you know, it’s neat- sometimes the person that appears most unlike you ends up being one of the people you can connect with the most.

Sunday morning services at Baptist Home Church include a deaf ministry, interpreting services for the deaf in the community. During Daraja’s stay at BHC in Wilkesboro, North Carolina last week, the choir got to hang out with one of the translators! Check it out:
